I own a 1998 Chevrolet Metro (old car i know) and every time i turn it on after its been sitting for a while the car starts to make a high pitched screeching noise as if a belt were too tight. i was wondering if anyone knew about cars enough to be able to help me out. ive looked under the hood and every time i pop it it stops making noise until i close it again. really? it stops when u open hood tilll u close it? is the hood bent? look at the top see if its rubbing around it. if not it might just be the way hoods up making the sound louder. but generaly aa squeal is a loose belt u could shut engine off and move it by hand see how loose it is. if not then uve got bearings dry or trying to go out on alternator or water pump sumthing in that nature. u could possibly loosen the belt tension and try wiggling sum pulleys. might not be bad enough to notice much yet. I drive an 01 lancer and a couple of days ago I noticed the oil light come on, but it was just flashing... at the time I thought it was the fuel light because my fuel was soo low and I had never actually seen the fuel light before... anyway it would flash on and off so I went and filled up with petrol. Went for a drive about 50km and the light kept flashing on and off, particuarly when stopped. Engine was making no weird noises. Came home tonight and about 100m from my house engine made a bit of a clunk... 50m later made it again... it was only a small clunk... got in safe to my park. If the spark is not timed to reach the cylinders correctly, the engine may run sluggishly, may produce spark, knock, or not run at all. The average backyard mechanic can check the timing of such an engine by using a timing light. Timing lights are available at auto parts stores and where tools are sold. Difficulty:Moderate Instructions Things You'll Need Repair manual for your vehicle Piece of chalk Timing Light Step by Step : 1 Turn the ignition key off and open the hood. 2 Locate the number one spark plug, which is usually located on the first cylinder at the front of the block for inline motors or at the front of the driver's side bank of cylinders for "V" type motors. Consult a repair manual for your particular vehicle if you are not sure where the number one cylinder is located on your engine. 3 Squeeze the handles together on the clamp on the inductive pickup lead on your timing light (usually the largest of the three clamps on a timing light) and place it over the spark plug wire on your engine's number one cylinder. Release the handles and the clamp should stay firmly in place. 4 Squeeze the handles of the red alligator clip on the timing light and place it over the positive battery terminal, then release the handles. Place the black alligator clip onto a large metal surface in the engine compartment, such as the alternator bracket or other similar part, but do clamp it to fuel system parts such as fuel lines, pumps or injectors. 5 Consult a repair manual for your vehicle to determine the correct engine timing specifications. Locate the stationary timing mark indicator near the engine crankshaft pulley at the front of the engine. Make a chalk mark on the graduated scale of the indicator that corresponds to the correct timing for your engine. Find the timing mark the crank shaft pulley and make a chalk mark on it, as well. 6 Start the engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature, which usually takes about fifteen minutes. Check to make sure the upper radiator hose is hot if you are not sure, which indicates operating temperature has been reached. 7 Aim the timing light at the chalk marks you made on the timing indicator and the crankshaft pulley and depress the trigger. Adjust the timing as described in an auto repair manual for your vehicle if the two chalk marks do not line up when the trigger is depressed. Continue to make adjustments and check the timing with the light until the two marks line up. 8 Turn the ignition key off. Disconnect the timing light from the engine in the reverse order and close the hood.
